An exhibit by Genetics of Design
Life on Earth presents itself in a staggering array of forms — from single-celled fungi to towering oaks, from the house mouse to the human being. Beneath this breathtaking diversity lies a shared blueprint written in the language of nucleic acids. The study of genetics is as much a study of life as it is one of chemistry and physics.
This exhibit invites you to see that invisible architecture made visible. Each piece transforms real genetic data into art drawn by pen plotter — a mechanical arm that guides a pen across paper with the precision of a machine, yet introduces subtle variations with each stroke. These organic imperfections give every piece a warmth and character that conventional printing cannot replicate, ensuring that no two prints — even of the same design — are ever quite alike. Much like the living systems they depict.
The exhibit features seven groupings: a portrait of David Attenborough; Macrobiology, tracing life from cell to tissue to organ; PTEN, following the central dogma from DNA to folded protein; Sampson, a commissioned portrait and genetic tile diagram of a Labrador-Pyrenees mix; Gene Density, comparing chromosomal architecture across three species; Genomic Features, revealing gene barcodes, Neanderthal echoes, and parental inheritance; and Mutation Drift, visualizing replication error rates in humans and retroviruses.
Nabil Azamy and Anthony DeSantis are the creators of this exhibit. With over 25 years of combined experience across academic and industrial disciplines — stretching from human genetics to robotics — they bring a deep appreciation for the diversity of life as it is expressed in genetics.
