Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our artwork, process, and ordering.

What is a pen plotter?

A pen plotter is a mechanical arm that holds a real pen and moves it across paper with high precision. Unlike a printer, which sprays ink through nozzles, a plotter physically draws each line — the same way you would draw by hand, but guided by code. The result is real ink on real paper, with subtle variations in pressure and line quality that make every piece unique.

Are these prints or originals?

Our plotted pieces are originals — each one is physically drawn by the plotter with ink pens on paper. Even when we run the same design twice, subtle differences in pen pressure, ink flow, and paper texture mean no two are ever identical. We also offer limited-edition prints of select works, which are clearly labeled as such.

What kind of ink and paper do you use?

We use archival-quality pens including Sakura Pigma Graphic markers and gel pens on a range of artist-grade papers — primarily Stonehenge (both White and Aqua Coldpress), Bristol, and occasionally specialty stocks. The specific medium is noted in each product listing.

Is the data in the artwork real?

Yes. Our pieces are derived from real scientific data — actual gene sequences, chromosomal coordinates, protein structures, and other biological datasets. The founder's background in bioinformatics and genetics ensures scientific accuracy. Each piece's description explains what data was used and how it was visualized.

How should I frame or display the artwork?

We recommend framing behind glass or acrylic with a mat to prevent the ink from touching the glazing. UV-protective glass will help preserve the colors over time. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight. For unframed pieces, store flat in a cool, dry place.

Do you accept commissions?

Yes — we create custom pieces including personalized portraits, DNA or gene visualizations from personal genetic data, and location-based maps. Commission work is handled on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out at info@geneticsofdesign.art to start a conversation.

How do you ship artwork?

All pieces are carefully packaged to prevent damage in transit. Unframed works are shipped flat between rigid boards in a protective sleeve. Framed pieces are wrapped and boxed with corner protectors. If your artwork arrives damaged, please contact us within 48 hours at info@geneticsofdesign.art with photos and we will arrange a replacement or full refund.

What is your return policy?

We offer refunds or exchanges within 30 days of delivery for unused items in original packaging. Custom commissions are non-refundable. Full details are on our Refund Policy page.
